The Boy Wonder of Brooklyn: A collection of gags from the early years by Cartoonist and my gramps

contemplating a dive from the Brooklyn Bridge at midnight, is one of the boy wonders of cartoondom. To put the sad story in his own words, I was born in Brooklyn in 1920 in a wee log cabin I built myself. Have had work in Collier's, American, Elks, Squad Riot, Hooey, King Features, and a batch coming out in Snap soon. (Incidentally, their rate is $10., not $15., as stated in Bulletin 47 unless I'm being Gypped as usual) Hobbies, piano; making money, music and nuisance of myself when I get near & juke box with Bing Crosby's recording of 'Beautiful Dreamer'. "I'm single, skinny, 6 ft tall, have Kneen Knacking for an especially to any offer made by any rich old lady with a hacking cough. Turn out about 40 roughs a week but would like a job with some syndicate doing one a day, with Friday to Monday off and a pension after 1st year." And that, folks is George Smith.

Before 9/11. . . Before President's sex lives were talked about on the 6 pm news. . . Before the sexual and feminist revolutions. . . Way, way before Political Correctness. . .There was a simpler time. . .a time when large families were not unusual. . .a time when everyone read "The Smith Family" cartoon in the Boston Globe (and other newspapers across the country). In the mid 1950s, Elsie Jennings, writer, and George Smith, cartoonist, were collaborating on a book with her stories and his drawings. Elsie's stories, like George's cartoons, found humor in the everyday occurrences of large-family life. Elsie became quite ill and died before finishing the project, but her daughter, Mary, has kept the material for over 50 years. If you remember "Duck and Cover" Nuns with yardsticks used as weapons on knuckles and knees If you grew up Catholic in the 1950s or early 1960s, or if you know someone who did If you've seen the play "Late Nite Catechism" and it brought you back to your own parochial school days, and you laughed so hard you had a stomachache for days. . . If you remember How It Was. . .

Mr. & Mrs. George and Virginia Smith: Brooklyn , New York, United States; Cartoonist George Smith and his wife Virginia began "The Smith Family" comic strip in 1950, after they had to call the fire department to rescue one of their youngsters from a treetop. Virginia and George had ten girls and one boy, 44 grandchildren, 118 great-grandchildren, and were once the subject of a protest by the Planned Parenthood League. Smith says The Boston Globe was the first newspaper to buy his comic strip. "The Smith Family" comic strip ran in the Globe for nearly 50 years. The Globe rescued me from plodding around the streets of New York freelancing cartoons to magazines.
